The Mile Square Health Center is now providing primary care with an emphasis on women’s and children’s health at the Englewood Clinic on Chicago’s South Side.

Mile Square Health Center, part of the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System, was awarded a contract to run the former city clinic beginning July 2.

“The Englewood community is one of the most economically, medically and socially challenged communities in the City of Chicago,” said Henry Taylor, executive director of Mile Square.

“We want to thank the City of Chicago for entrusting us with the opportunity to improve the quality of life and health status for patients who live in the Englewood community.”

Nurse midwives from the UI Health System have provided women’s health care to the Englewood Clinic for the last seven years.

Health care services at Mile Square Englewood, 641 W. 63rd St., include comprehensive, culturally competent primary care, pregnancy testing and individual case management to assist patients and reduce barriers to care. Mile Square also supports community education, outreach and advocacy services to promote healthy lifestyles and disease prevention.

“Our focus is on creating comprehensive care and making that care available to underserved populations,” said Joe G.N. “Skip” Garcia, university vice president for health affairs.

“We will bring personalized, high quality primary care to the clinic and, when needed, tap into the specialized care resources of the UI Health System.”

Mile Square currently includes 11 federally qualified health centers. The Englewood Clinic joins four regional primary care clinics, including the main clinic, Mile Square Health Center on Washington Boulevard, and facilities in Cicero and the South Shore and Back of the Yards neighborhoods.

Hours at the Englewood Clinic will be 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with after-hours and weekend care available through the University of Illinois Mile Square Health Center network.
